CAS GPA Calculator
Calculate Your LSAC CAS GPA
What is a CAS GPA?
A CAS GPA is the GPA calculated by the Law School Admission Council’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS) for law school applications. CAS (or LSAC’s CAS) summarizes your transcripts from all undergraduate institutions, converts grades to a standardized numeric scale, and reports a single, comparable GPA that law schools use when reviewing applicants. It is the official academic score used in the law school admission process.
How the Calculator Computes Your GPA
This CAS GPA calculator follows the LSAC methodology:
- Grade Conversion: Each letter grade is mapped to the official LSAC grade value (e.g., A+ = 4.33, A = 4.00, B+ = 3.33).
- Credit Conversion: If you mark a course as using "Quarter Credits," its credit hours are converted to semester-equivalents by multiplying by 2/3.
- Quality Points: The calculator multiplies each course’s grade value by its (converted) credit hours to get its quality points.
- Final Calculation: Your LSAC CAS GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all (converted) credit hours.
Grade Conversion Table (LSAC-style)
| Letter Grade | LSAC Value | Letter Grade | LSAC Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 | C+ | 2.33 |
| A | 4.00 | C | 2.00 |
| A– | 3.67 | C– | 1.67 |
| AB | 3.50 | CD | 1.50 |
| B+ | 3.33 | D+ | 1.33 |
| B | 3.00 | D | 1.00 |
| B– | 2.67 | D– | 0.67 |
| BC | 2.50 | F/WF | 0.00 |
Example CAS GPA Calculation
| Course | Grade | Credits (Semester) | LSAC Grade Value | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENG101 | A | 3 | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| MATH220 | B+ | 4 | 3.33 | 13.32 |
| HIST200 | A+ | 3 | 4.33 | 12.99 |
| SOC101 | C | 3 | 2.00 | 6.00 |
| Total | - | 13 | - | 44.31 |
CAS GPA = 44.31 (Total Quality Points) / 13 (Total Credits) = 3.408
Useful FAQs for Law School Applicants
Q: Why is my CAS GPA different from my transcript GPA?
A: Common reasons include: LSAC includes all undergraduate work (transfers, study abroad), counts every repeated attempt of a course, and converts grades like A+ to 4.33, which your home institution may not do. This standardization is why the LSAC CAS GPA often differs.
Q: Does CAS count repeated courses?
A: Yes. LSAC includes each attempt of a course that appears on your transcript in its CAS GPA calculation, even if your school's policy is to replace the old grade. This is one of the most significant factors in GPA differences.
Q: How are quarter credits handled?
A: LSAC converts quarter credits to semester-equivalent credits for all GPA calculations. The standard conversion is to multiply the number of quarter credits by 2/3.
Q: Is the CAS GPA official?
A: Yes. The GPA calculated by LSAC's Credential Assembly Service is the official academic score that law schools use for admissions review. This calculator provides a very close estimate of that official score.
