How the ELA Regents Scaling Works
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) converts your raw score into a scaled score to account for minor differences in exam difficulty. Your raw score is the total of your points from all three parts of the exam.
- Part 1: Reading Comprehension (24 multiple-choice questions, 1 point each).
- Part 2: Argument Essay (scored on a 6-point rubric, then multiplied by 4 for a max of 24 points).
- Part 3: Text Analysis Response (scored on a 4-point rubric, then multiplied by 2 for a max of 8 points).
The total weighted raw score is 0–56 points, which is then mapped to the final 0–100 scaled score. The weighted formula is:
Weighted Raw Score = Part 1 + (Part 2 Score x 4) + (Part 3 Score x 2)
A scaled score of 65 or higher is considered passing, while 85 or higher is mastery.
