Calculation Logic & Formulas

Both Overall GPA and Science GPA are calculated by using weighted grade points. The formulas below show how your grades and credit hours combine:

Overall GPA Formula:

Overall GPA = ( Σ (Credit Hours × Grade Value) ) ÷ ( Σ Credit Hours )

Science GPA Formula:

Science GPA = ( Σ (Credit Hours × Grade Value) for Biology, Chemistry, Physics courses ) ÷ ( Σ Credit Hours for Science Courses )

Note: If you have quarter-hour courses, multiply the credits by 0.667 before calculating.

FAQs

Q1: What does this Optometry GPA calculator measure?

It calculates your Overall GPA and your Science Prerequisite GPA, exactly how OptomCAS processes grades for optometry applications.

Q2: How are repeated courses handled?

OptomCAS includes all attempts. You may choose to simulate “highest grade only” if your school allows it, although actual application GPA won’t change.

Q3: Do quarter-hour credits count?

Yes. Quarter credits are automatically converted to semester credits at the rate of 0.667 semester hours per quarter hour.

Q4: What GPA range is considered competitive?

While most OD programs require a 3.0 minimum, average accepted applicants usually have Overall GPAs in the 3.4–3.7 range and science GPAs near 3.3–3.5.

Q5: Why track a separate Science GPA?

Science GPA shows how well you did specifically in courses (Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) that are critical for optometry training. Schools often review it separately.

Q6: Can I export my results?

Yes — use the Print or Download PDF buttons to save your GPA report, chart, and summary for future review or advising sessions.
