Does Stanford Calculate GPA?
This is the most common question among Stanford students. The short answer is no. Stanford University transcripts do not include a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA), nor a major GPA. The Registrar’s Office policy is that the rigorous nature of the coursework speaks for itself.
However, students applying to medical school (AMCAS), law school (LSAC), or business school are required to calculate and report a GPA. This Stanford GPA Calculator solves that problem by using the university’s internal grading definitions to provide the accurate number you need for your applications.
The Official Stanford Grading Scale (4.3 Scale)
Unlike many universities that cap grades at 4.0, Stanford utilizes a 4.3 scale. This means an A+ is worth 4.3 grade points, providing a slight boost over a standard 4.0 system. Below is the official table used for calculation:
| Grade | Grade Points | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | Exceptional |
| A | 4.0 | Excellent |
| A- | 3.7 | |
| B+ | 3.3 | |
| B | 3.0 | Good |
| B- | 2.7 | |
| C+ | 2.3 | |
| C | 2.0 | Satisfactory |
| C- | 1.7 | |
| D+ | 1.3 | |
| D | 1.0 | Minimal Pass |
| NP / F | 0.0 | Not Passed / Fail |
Special Grading Codes
- CR / NC (Credit / No Credit): These grades have no impact on your GPA. They are excluded from the calculation entirely.
- S / NC (Satisfactory / No Credit): Also excluded from GPA calculations.
- G (Grade): In the Graduate School of Business (GSB), different grading standards apply (Honors, High Pass, Pass, Low Pass, Fail). This calculator is designed for Undergraduate and standard Graduate grading.
- RP (Repeated Course): Check with your department. Generally, the second grade is calculated, but policies vary by year.
How to Calculate Your Stanford GPA
The formula for calculating your GPA is a Weighted Average. Here is the math behind the tool:
GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Units Attempted
Example:
- CS 106A (5 Units): Grade A (4.0) → 5 × 4.0 = 20.0 Points
- PWR 1 (4 Units): Grade A+ (4.3) → 4 × 4.3 = 17.2 Points
- MATH 51 (5 Units): Grade B+ (3.3) → 5 × 3.3 = 16.5 Points
Total Points: 53.7
Total Units: 14
GPA: 53.7 ÷ 14 = 3.835
User Tips for Accuracy
- Check your unofficial transcript on Axess to verify the number of units for each course.
- Exclude any courses marked "CR", "NC", "S", "L" (Pass, in Law School), or "W" (Withdraw).
- If you are calculating for AMCAS (Medical School), note that they may break down "Science GPA" differently than your cumulative GPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Stanford show GPA on transcripts?
No, Stanford University does not calculate or record a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) on official transcripts. Students must calculate it themselves for external applications.
What is the highest GPA at Stanford?
The highest possible GPA at Stanford is a 4.3, which corresponds to an A+ grade. This is higher than the standard 4.0 scale used at many other institutions.
Do CR/NC classes count toward GPA?
No. Courses taken for Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) or Satisfactory/No Credit (S/NC) do not generate grade points and are excluded from the GPA divisor.
