Z-Table (Standard Normal Distribution)

This z-table gives the cumulative probability Φ(z), the area under the standard normal curve to the left of z, for every z from −3.49 to 3.49 in steps of 0.01. Read the row for the first two digits of z and the column for the hundredths: for z = 1.96, the row 1.9 and column 0.06 give 0.9750. The negative half of the table is included so you do not need to use symmetry.

Use the lookup box to get the exact area for any z (including values beyond the table) or the area to the right. The table values are generated from the same complementary error function the site’s normal distribution calculator uses and are rounded to four decimals, matching standard textbook tables.

Common critical values: 1.645 leaves 5% in the upper tail, 1.960 leaves 2.5% (the 95% two-tailed value), 2.326 leaves 1% and 2.576 leaves 0.5%. Print this page for exams that provide a table but no calculator, or use the z-score calculator when you have a raw score rather than z.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a z-table?
Find the row matching z to one decimal place and the column matching the second decimal. The cell is the area to the left of z. For area to the right, subtract from 1.
What is the z-table value for 1.96?
0.9750. That leaves 0.0250 in the upper tail, which is why ±1.96 is the 95% two-tailed critical value.
How do I use the table for negative z?
Read it directly from the negative rows here. In a positive-only table, use Φ(−z) = 1 − Φ(z).
What is the area between two z values?
Φ(z₂) − Φ(z₁). For −1 and 1 that is 0.8413 − 0.1587 = 0.6826, the 68% of the empirical rule.
