NCAA Core GPA Calculator
To compete as a freshman at an NCAA Division I or II school, the NCAA Eligibility Center checks your core-course GPA from 16 NCAA-approved core courses. Enter each approved core course, its grade, units and subject area. The calculator returns your core GPA and checks the unit counts for both divisions.
The Eligibility Center uses A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0 points per unit. If your high school gives extra weight to honors or AP courses, the NCAA may use that weighting too; choose your school’s bonus and mark the weighted courses. Division I requires a minimum 2.300 core GPA and Division II a minimum 2.200. Division I also requires 10 core courses, 7 of them in English, math or science, to be completed before your seventh semester. Only courses on your high school’s NCAA list of approved core courses count.
The 16 units are split by area. Division I needs 4 English, 3 math (Algebra I or higher), 2 natural or physical science, 1 more English, math or science, 2 social science and 4 additional core units. Division II needs 3 English, 2 math, 2 science, 3 more English, math or science, 2 social science and 4 additional. In the default example, 16 units earn 45.5 quality points, so the core GPA is 2.84. This calculator averages every course you enter. The Eligibility Center uses your best grades in the courses that meet the requirements, so leave out weaker extra courses to match its number.

- Check the 16 core unitsExtra units in English, math or science first fill the “extra English, math or science” line; anything left over counts toward the 4 additional units.
Frequently asked questions
- Are test scores still required for NCAA eligibility?
- No. Division I and II removed the SAT/ACT requirement for initial eligibility in 2023, so the core-course GPA and the 16 core courses carry the academic check.
- Do plus and minus grades count?
- The Eligibility Center uses whole letter values, so an A− counts as an A (4 points) and a B+ as a B (3 points).
- Which classes are core courses?
- Only courses on your high school’s NCAA-approved list. You can look it up by school on the Eligibility Center website. Remedial and credit-recovery courses often do not qualify.
- What is the 10/7 rule?
- For Division I, 10 of your 16 core courses must be completed before your seventh semester (senior year), and 7 of those 10 must be in English, math or natural/physical science. Those grades are then locked.
