WAM Calculator
Australian universities summarise marks as a Weighted Average Mark (WAM): each unit’s mark out of 100 is weighted by its credit points. Formula: WAM = Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ Σ credit points. Enter your units, marks and credit points. The calculator returns your WAM and the grade band it falls in.
Some universities and honours programs weight later years more heavily, for example second-year units ×2 and third-year units ×3. Switch on the year-weight column to apply those multipliers; the plain WAM is shown alongside. Grade bands also differ. Many universities, including UNSW and the University of Sydney, use HD 85+, D 75+, C 65+, P 50+, while Monash uses 80/70/60/50. Pick the set that matches your handbook.
Worked example: marks of 78, 71, 84, 69 and 88, each worth 6 credit points, give 2,340 ÷ 30 = 78.00. That is a Distinction average on the 85/75/65/50 bands. Failed units normally count with their mark, and units taken pass/fail or as credit transfer usually do not count at all.

Distinction average (bands 85/75/65/50)
| Unit | Mark | Credit points | Mark × CP |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECON1101 | 78 | 6 | 468 |

- Add the credit pointsΣ = 30
- Divide2340 ÷ 30 = 78.00
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good WAM?
- A WAM of 75+ is a Distinction average and 85+ is High Distinction on the 85/75/65/50 bands. Many honours and graduate programs ask for 65–75+.
- Is WAM the same as GPA?
- No. WAM averages marks out of 100, while GPA averages grade points (7-point or 4-point). Two students with the same grades can rank differently on each. See the Australian GPA calculator.
- Do failed units count in WAM?
- At most universities yes, with the actual mark. Some exclude units later repeated and passed; check your university’s WAM policy.
- What is a weighted WAM?
- A WAM where units also get a year-level or honours multiplier. It is used for honours entry and university medals at some institutions.
