AP Credit Calculator
AP exams are scored 1 to 5, but each college decides which scores earn credit and how many credits each exam is worth. A 3 earns credit at many public universities. Many selective colleges ask for a 4 or 5, and some give placement only. Enter each exam with your score, the minimum score your college accepts and the credits it gives. The calculator adds up your credits and turns them into semesters and tuition.
Find the numbers in your college’s AP credit policy, which is usually published by the registrar or admissions office. The College Board also hosts an AP Credit Policy search. Year-long subjects such as AP Biology or AP Calculus BC often earn 6 to 8 credits, and one-semester subjects about 3. The default rows are an illustration, not any college’s policy.
Worked example: five exams, of which four meet the college’s minimum, earn 18 credits. At 15 credits a semester that is 1.2 semesters, worth about $8,100 at $450 per credit hour. Credit only saves time if it counts toward your degree, either by meeting a requirement or by letting you skip a course. Check how your major treats it.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a 3 a passing score on an AP exam?
- The College Board describes a 3 as qualified. Whether it earns credit depends entirely on the college. Many public universities accept a 3, while many selective colleges require a 4 or 5.
- Can AP credit let me graduate early?
- It can if the credits count toward your degree. Enter your total in the graduation date calculator to see how far it moves your finish date.
- Do AP scores affect my college GPA?
- Usually not. AP credit is normally recorded as transfer credit with no grade, so it counts toward your hours but not your college GPA.
- Is it ever better to decline AP credit?
- Sometimes. Pre-med students and some engineering programs may prefer to take the college version of a course, and some majors require it anyway. Check with an advisor.
