BPUT SGPA & CGPA Calculator
BPUT's grading has one feature almost no other university shares: a failed course is not worth zero. In the table in clause 6.1 of the academic regulations, grade F (below 37 marks) carries 2 grade points, while malpractice (M) and absent (S) carry 0. The pass line is also unusual — D starts at 37, not 40, for theory papers, while practicals, sessionals, projects and viva need at least a C (50).
The regulations call the sum of credit points in a semester the credit index. SGPA is the credit index divided by the semester's credits, and CGPA is the running total of credit indices divided by the running total of credits. The calculator shows the credit index row by row so you can match it against your grade sheet.
Enter each subject's credit and letter grade. The result also gives the equivalent percentage under BPUT's 2012 notice, (CGPA − 0.50) × 10. Note that BPUT itself does not award any class or division; a CGPA of 6.0 is the degree requirement.

Enter each semester's SGPA and its total credits.
Σ(SGPA × credits) = 515.79 ÷ 66 credits = 7.8150, rounded to 2 decimals.
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.95 | 21 | 166.95 |
| 2 | 7.4 | 23 | 170.2 |
| 3 | 8.12 | 22 | 178.64 |
Equivalent percentage: 73.20% using Equivalent percentage = (CGPA − 0.50) × 10 (BPUT Notice No. 1717, 16 May 2012).
How BPUT calculates SGPA and CGPA
Rules from the BPUT Academic Regulations (clause 6), Biju Patnaik University of Technology:
- Credit point = grade point × credit for each course item; credit index = Σ credit points in the semester (clause 6.3).
- SGPA = credit index ÷ Σ credits of the semester; CGPA = Σ credit index of all semesters so far ÷ Σ credits of all those semesters.
- Grade D is the pass grade for theory; grade C is the pass grade for practical, sessional, project, seminar and viva-voce (clause 6.1).
- BPUT awards no class or division at semester or degree level (clause 7.0); a CGPA of 6.0 is required for the degree (clause 7.1 b).
SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) ÷ ΣCi
CGPA = Σ(SGPAj × Cj) ÷ ΣCj
Equivalent percentage = (CGPA − 0.50) × 10

| A | 8 | 70 to below 80 | Very Good |
| B | 7 | 60 to below 70 | Good |
| C | 6 | 50 to below 60 | Fair |
| D | 5 | 37 to below 50 | Below Average |
| F | 2 | Below 37 | Failed |
| M | 0 | — | Malpractice |
| S | 0 | — | Absent |
Worked example
The SGPA example loaded above has 7 courses (4 credits at E, 4 credits at A, 3 credits at B and so on) worth 21 credits and 171 credit points, so the SGPA is 171 ÷ 21 = 8.14.
For the CGPA, the example semesters (7.95 on 21 credits; 7.4 on 23 credits; 8.12 on 22 credits) give Σ(SGPA × credits) = 515.79 over 66 credits, so the CGPA is 7.82, which is 73.20% under Equivalent percentage = (CGPA − 0.50) × 10.
