Madras University CGPA Calculator (PG)
In the University of Madras CBCS scheme for postgraduate programmes in the university departments, grade points are not fixed per letter. The handbook's conversion table maps marks to points one-for-ten: 90–100 marks is 9.0–10.0, 80–89 is 8.0–8.9, and so on down to 50–59, which is 5.0–5.9. So a paper scored at 76 carries 7.6 grade points and the letter D (Distinction). This calculator therefore works from your marks.
The pass mark for PG courses is 50%. The handbook defines the GPA as the sum of credits × grade points divided by the sum of the credits of the courses passed in the semester, so a failed paper is left out until you clear it; the calculator marks it "not counted". The CGPA is the same weighted average over the whole programme — for a two-year Masters, the best 81 credits, including the best 60 core and 21 elective credits.
The overall classification table is detailed: 9.5–10 is O+ (First Class – Exemplary), 7.5–9.49 are the distinction bands D, D+, D++ and O (for first-appearance candidates), 6.0–7.49 is First Class and 5.0–5.99 Second Class. The handbook does not state a percentage conversion, so none is shown.

How University of Madras calculates GPA and CGPA
Rules from the University of Madras CBCS Handbook 2021-22 (University Departments, PG programmes):
- Grade points follow the marks: the conversion table maps 90–100 marks to 9.0–10.0 points, 80–89 to 8.0–8.9 and so on down to 50–59 → 5.0–5.9, i.e. one grade point per ten marks.
- PG candidates need 50% to pass a course (clause 13.1).
- GPA = Σ Ci Gi / Σ Ci over the courses passed in the semester; CGPA = Σn Σi Cni Gni / Σn Σi Cni over the entire programme.
- For two-year Masters programmes the CGPA uses the best 81 credits (best 60 core, best 21 elective); soft skills must be passed but do not count for classification.
Grade point = marks % × 0.1 (for marks of 50% or more)
GPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) ÷ ΣCi
CGPA = Σ(GPAj × Cj) ÷ ΣCj

Worked example
The GPA example loaded above has 6 papers worth 20 credits. Each paper’s marks become grade points (for instance 78% gives 7.8), the credit points add up to 155.4, and 155.4 ÷ 20 = 7.77.
For the CGPA, the example semesters (7.73 on 20 credits; 7.41 on 22 credits; 8.05 on 20 credits; 7.9 on 19 credits) give Σ(GPA × credits) = 628.72 over 81 credits, so the CGPA is 7.76.
