Extra Credit Calculator
Extra credit counts differently depending on where your teacher puts it. This calculator handles the three common cases. (1) Bonus points on total points: points are added to what you earned but not to what was possible, so new grade = (earned + bonus) ÷ possible. (2) Percentage points on the final grade, for example “+2% to your final grade”. (3) Bonus points inside one weighted category, such as 5 extra homework points when homework is 40% of the grade.
In a points-based class each bonus point is worth 100 ÷ total possible points, so 10 extra points in a 500-point course raise the grade by 2 percentage points. In a weighted category, the boost is scaled by the category weight. The result shows the grade before and after, the letter grade change, and the value of a single extra-credit point.
Worked example: 412 of 500 points is 82.4% (B−). Fifteen extra points give 427 ÷ 500 = 85.4% (B). That is a 3-point gain, 0.2 points per bonus point.
Result and step-by-step working
Was 82.40% (B-) → now B · gain of 3.00 percentage points
- Before412 ÷ 500 = 82.40%
- Add the bonus points to the earned points only(412 + 15) ÷ 500 = 85.40%
- Value of each bonus pointOne extra point is worth 0.200 percentage points here; the more total points in the course, the less each one moves your grade.
Frequently asked questions
- Is extra credit added to points earned or points possible?
- Normally only to points earned. If the teacher adds it to both (as a new assignment), it works like a normal assignment and helps less. In that case use the Grade Calculator instead.
- Can extra credit take me over 100%?
- Mathematically yes. Many teachers and learning systems cap the course grade at 100%.
- How many extra credit points do I need for a B?
- Bonus points needed = (target % × possible ÷ 100) − earned. For 412/500 and a target of 83%, you need 415 − 412 = 3 points.
- Why does extra credit barely change my grade?
- In a course with many total points, each point is worth very little, and inside a small-weight category it is diluted further. Check the “value of each bonus point” line.
