Carleton GPA Calculator (12-Point Scale)
Carleton University uses a 12-point grade point scale. Enter each course as a final percentage or a letter grade, with its credit value (most courses are 0.5 credit, full-year courses 1.0). The calculator converts each grade with Carleton’s published table and gives your grade point average out of 12.
In Carleton’s Undergraduate Calendar the grade points listed are for a 1.0-credit course, and they are adjusted proportionately for other credit values. So an A+ in a 0.5-credit course gives 6 grade points. The GPA is the total grade points divided by the total credits, which is what the calculator does. Enter every course for a cumulative GPA (CGPA), or only the courses in your major for a major CGPA.
Default example: five 0.5-credit courses (88%, B, 79%, 65%, 91%) are worth 11, 8, 9, 5 and 12 points per credit. That gives 22.5 grade points over 2.5 credits, a GPA of 9.00, which is a B+ average. The calendar also says an instructor whose grade conversion differs from the standard percentages must tell the class in the course outline.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Carleton's GPA out of 12 or 4?
- Carleton reports GPAs on the 12-point scale. If another school asks for a 4.0 GPA, it will normally convert your transcript itself, so use its rules rather than dividing by 3.
- Do 0.5-credit courses count less?
- Yes. Grade points are for a 1.0-credit course and scale with credit value, so a 0.5-credit course has half the weight.
- What grades are left out of the GPA?
- Notations such as AEG (aegrotat) have no impact on the CGPA. Enter only courses that carry a letter grade.
- What is a B+ average at Carleton?
- A GPA of 9.00 on the 12-point scale, which corresponds to 77–79%.
