University of Glasgow GPA and Degree Classification Calculator

The University of Glasgow grades every course on a 22-point scale. Grades run from A1 (22) to H (0), and honours degrees are classified from a credit-weighted grade point average. Enter your honours courses with their first-attempt grade, credits and year, and set the year weights from your degree regulations. The calculator gives your GPA and classification by the University’s rules.

The rules come from the University’s Assessment Regulations. A GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points, expressed to one decimal place. Each year’s GPA is calculated separately and then combined using the year weights. Stage one: 17.5–22.0 is a First, 14.5–17.0 a 2:1, 11.5–14.0 a 2:2 and 9.0–11.0 a Third. Stage two: a GPA of 17.1–17.4, 14.1–14.4 or 11.1–11.4 falls between classes. You then get the higher class if at least half of your weighted course grade profile is at A, B or C or above respectively.

Year weights differ by programme, and the regulations for your degree say which years count. The default example uses 50/50, so change it to match yours. The profile weights each course by its credits and its year’s weight. Default example: Junior Honours average 16.0 and Senior Honours average 17.8 combine to 16.9, an upper second.

  1. Grade points
    Each grade has a fixed value on Glasgow Grading Scheme 1: A1 = 22 down to A5 = 18, B1–B3 = 17–15, C1–C3 = 14–12, D1–D3 = 11–9, E1–E3 = 8–6, F1–F3 = 5–3, G1–G2 = 2–1, H = 0.
  2. GPA for each year
Credit-weighted average within each Honours year: Junior Honours 16, Senior Honours 17.8.
  3. Combine the years
Weighted by the year weights: 16.9, shown to one decimal place as 16.9.
  4. Stage one
    First 17.5–22.0, 2:1 14.5–17.0, 2:2 11.5–14.0, Third 9.0–11.0. 16.9 falls inside a range, so the classification is decided here.
  5. Stage two (17.1–17.4, 14.1–14.4, 11.1–11.4)
You get the higher class if at least half of your weighted course grade profile is at A, B or C or above respectively. Your profile: 32.5% at A, 87.5% at B or above, 100% at C or above.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA do I need for a First at Glasgow?
17.5 or above gives a First at stage one. From 17.1 to 17.4 you get a First only if at least half of your weighted course grade profile is at grade A.
Is the classification based on resit grades?
No. Classification uses grades achieved at the first attempt. The GPA including reassessment is used for progression and for the award of the degree, not for the class. If you meet the Honours requirements after reassessment but your first-attempt GPA is below 9.0, you receive a third class degree.
How are Junior and Senior Honours weighted?
Your degree regulations set which years count and how they are weighted. Enter those weights in the calculator. The 50/50 default is only an example.
Does Glasgow round the GPA?
The regulations say a GPA is expressed to one decimal place. This calculator rounds to the nearest 0.1 and also shows the unrounded value, so you can see if you are close to a boundary.
