HOPE GPA Calculator (Georgia HOPE and Zell Miller)
Georgia’s HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships use a HOPE GPA that the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) calculates from your core courses only: English, math, science, social studies and world language, plus specific fourth-science courses (and, from the class of 2027, approved advanced fine arts). Every attempt of every core course counts, including repeats and failed grades.
GSFC removes any weighting your high school added and puts each grade on a plain 4.0 scale: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Plus and minus do not matter (B− = 3.0). It then adds 0.5 back to grades of B, C, D and F in AP, IB and dual-enrollment core courses. An A stays at 4.0, and honors courses get no extra weight. The result is not rounded. Enter one row per semester grade with its credit (usually 0.5).
To be a HOPE Scholar you need a 3.00 HOPE GPA and at least four rigor credits from the Academic Rigor Course List. Zell Miller needs a 3.70, the same four rigor credits and an SAT of 1200 (math plus reading) or the equivalent ACT, which GSFC lists as 25 for students graduating after December 31, 2023, from a single test date. In the default example, ten semester grades average 3.40, so the student meets HOPE but not Zell Miller.

- Remove school weightingA = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. A plus or minus does not change the value (B− = 3.0). Honors courses get no extra weight.
- Add 0.5 for AP, IB and dual enrollmentOnly grades of B, C, D and F get +0.5, because an A cannot go above 4.0.
- Average by credits17.00 ÷ 5 = 3.4 → 3.40 (GSFC does not round).

Frequently asked questions
- Why is my HOPE GPA different from my school GPA?
- Your school may weight honors courses, use plus/minus grades, or count electives. GSFC uses core courses only, removes school weighting, ignores plus and minus, and adds 0.5 only to B–F grades in AP, IB and dual-enrollment courses.
- Do failed or repeated courses count in the HOPE GPA?
- Yes. GSFC counts all attempts of an eligible core course, pass or fail, so a repeated course appears twice.
- Is the HOPE GPA rounded up?
- No. GSFC states that the HOPE GPA calculation does not allow any rounding, so a 2.99 does not become a 3.00.
- Where can I see my official HOPE GPA?
- Georgia high schools send transcript data to GSFC. You can view the result in your GAfutures account under My High School HOPE GPA. Students from out-of-state high schools are evaluated from an official transcript.
