Final Exam Points Calculator
Many classes do not weight categories. Your grade is simply points earned ÷ points possible. In a points-based class, the final exam’s weight is just its share of the total points. Enter your points so far, what the final is worth and the grade you want. The calculator returns the points (and percentage) you need on the final, with a row for each letter-grade cut-off.
The formula: points needed = target % × (points so far + final points + other points still to come) − points earned − expected points on those other assignments. Leave “other points” at 0 if the final is the last thing graded. If some homework or a project is still open, enter its points and the score you expect on it.
Worked example (the default): 412 of 500 points so far (82.4%), with a 200-point final. For 80% you need 0.80 × 700 = 560 points in total, so 560 − 412 = 148 points on the final, which is 74%. A 90% would need 218 points, more than the final is worth, so it is out of reach without extra credit. If your class uses weighted categories instead, use the final exam grade calculator.
Result and step-by-step working
That is 74% on the final. Current grade: 82.4%.
| Course grade | Needed on the final |
|---|---|
| 90% | 218 pts (109%, more than the final is worth) |
| 80% | 148 pts (74%) |
| 70% | 78 pts (39%) |
| 60% | 8 pts (4%) |
- Total points in the course500 so far + 200 final = 700.
- Points needed for 80%80% × 700 = 560 points.
- Subtract what you have560 − 412 = 148 points on the final.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if my class is points-based or weighted?
- Check the syllabus. If it lists categories with percentages (for example tests 50%, homework 20%), it is weighted. If it lists point values that add up to a total, it is points-based.
- What does it mean if I need more than 100% on the final?
- That target cannot be reached with the final alone. You would need extra credit or more points from other assignments.
- What if I need a negative number of points?
- Then you already have the target grade locked in, even with a zero on the final. The calculator shows it as already secured.
- Does it handle extra-credit points?
- Add extra-credit points to points earned without adding them to points possible. That is how most points-based gradebooks treat them.
