HEC CGPA Calculator (Pakistan, 4.0 Scale)

HEC's examination policy for Pakistani universities recommends a standard 0.00–4.00 scale and one formula: GPA = Σ(course credit hours × grade point earned) ÷ total credit hours for the semester, and CGPA = the same sum over every course taken in every semester. Because HEC's fractionalized grading gives each letter a range of grade points rather than a single value (A is 3.67–4.00, B+ is 3.01–3.33, and so on), enter the grade point printed on your transcript for each course rather than a letter.

Individual universities choose relative or absolute grading within HEC's framework, so the grade point for a given mark can differ between institutions — HEC recommends relative grading where a class has more than 20 students. What HEC fixes is the arithmetic and the minimums: a BS needs a CGPA of at least 2.00 to complete and an MS/MPhil 2.50.

Enter credit hours and grade points for the semester GPA, and GPA plus credit hours for each semester to get the CGPA. The result shows the equivalent percentage using clause 13.1, where your CGPA is given the lowest percentage of its band.

How HEC calculates GPA and CGPA

Rules from the HEC Examination Policy Guidelines (semester system), Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan:

  • GPA = Σ(course credit hours × grade point earned) ÷ total semester credit hours; CGPA = the same over all courses taken in all semesters (clause 14). A 0.00–4.00 scale is recommended to all HEIs.
  • Clause 13.1 (fractionalized grading) maps grade-point ranges to percentage ranges. A student with a given CGPA is given the minimum percentage of the corresponding band — e.g. CGPA 3.00 = 71% (note to 13.1).
  • Minimum CGPA to complete the degree: 2.00 for BS and 2.50 for MS/MPhil (clause 15.1).
  • An undergraduate may repeat a course graded below C; both grades stay on the transcript but only the better one counts in the CGPA (clause 9.2). A W (withdrawal) has no effect on the CGPA; withdrawing after week 6 is an F that counts (8.4, 8.5).

GPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) ÷ ΣCi

CGPA = Σ(GPAj × Cj) ÷ ΣCj

Worked example

The GPA example loaded above has 6 courses (3 credits at 3.67, 3 credits at 3.33, 3 credits at 4.0 and so on) worth 16 credits and 54.01 credit points, so the GPA is 54.01 ÷ 16 = 3.38.

For the CGPA, the example semesters (3.45 on 16 credits; 3.21 on 18 credits; 3.62 on 17 credits) give Σ(GPA × credits) = 174.52 over 51 credits, so the CGPA is 3.42.

Frequently asked questions

How is CGPA calculated according to HEC?
CGPA = Σ(course credit hours × grade point earned) over all courses in all semesters ÷ total credit hours taken (HEC Examination Policy, clause 14).
What is the minimum CGPA for a BS degree in Pakistan?
2.00 for BS and 2.50 for MS/MPhil, per clause 15.1 of the HEC policy.
Does a repeated course replace the old grade in HEC CGPA?
For undergraduates repeating a course graded below C, both grades stay on the transcript but only the better grade is used in the CGPA (clause 9.2).
Is HEC grading relative or absolute?
HEC allows both and recommends relative grading for classes above 20 students and absolute grading below 20; the university's Controller of Examinations must share the method used.
