Australian GPA Calculator
Australian universities calculate GPA from letter grades, not marks. On the common 7-point scale, High Distinction = 7, Distinction = 6, Credit = 5 and Pass = 4. On the 4-point scale they are 4, 3, 2 and 1. Each grade is weighted by the unit’s credit points: GPA = Σ(grade points × credit points) ÷ Σ credit points.
Universities give a fail different values: most give 0, and some give a small non-zero number on their scale. Enter the value from your handbook in the fail field. Pass/fail units, credit transfers and withdrawn units are usually excluded. Because GPA uses grade bands, a mark of 76 and a mark of 84 both count as a Distinction. Your GPA can therefore move differently from your WAM.
Worked example: D, C, HD, P and D in five 6-credit-point units give (6 + 5 + 7 + 4 + 6) × 6 = 168 ÷ 30 = 5.60 on the 7-point scale. On the 4-point scale the same grades give 2.60.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a good GPA in Australia?
- On the 7-point scale, 5.0 is a Credit average, 6.0 a Distinction average and 6.5+ is excellent. Graduate programs often ask for 5.0 or higher.
- How do I convert an Australian 7-point GPA to a US 4.0 GPA?
- There is no single official formula. Credential evaluators such as WES convert grade by grade (for example HD and D to A). Divide-by-7-times-4 is only a rough guide.
- Do failed units count in my GPA?
- Yes at most universities, usually at 0 points. Check whether a later pass replaces the fail in your university’s rules.
- Is GPA or WAM more important?
- It depends on the university and the program. Many use WAM for honours and scholarships and GPA for graduate entry. Use both calculators to see each.
