Rubric Grade Calculator

A rubric score such as 3 out of 4 is not a 3/4 = 75% grade until you decide how the criteria are weighted. Enter each criterion’s score, its top level and its weight. This calculator gives the weighted percentage, the letter grade on the standard US scale, and the points out of the assignment’s total. Choose “every rubric point counts the same” to add raw points instead.

Formula: grade = Σ(weight × score ÷ max) ÷ Σ weights. Weights that do not add up to 100 are rescaled automatically. Criteria can have different maximums, for example a 4-point content row and a 2-point formatting row. Teachers can use the table to show students how each criterion contributed.

Worked example: thesis 3/4 (25%), evidence 4/4 (25%), organization 3/4 (20%), analysis 2/4 (20%) and mechanics 4/4 (10%) give 18.75 + 25 + 15 + 10 + 10 = 78.75%, a C+ or 78.75 of 100 points.

  1. Score ÷ max for each criterion
    Each row becomes a fraction of its top level.
  2. Apply the weights
    Grade = Σ(weight × score ÷ max) ÷ Σweights = 78.75%.
  3. Unweighted check
    Raw rubric points: 16 of 20 = 80.00%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a 4-point rubric to a percentage?
Divide the score by the maximum: 3/4 = 75%, 3.5/4 = 87.5%. For several criteria, add the scores and divide by the total possible, or use weights as above. Some schools use a conversion table instead (for example 3 = 85%). If yours does, apply that table to each criterion.
Why does a straight percentage feel harsh on rubrics?
On a 4-level rubric, “proficient” (3/4) becomes 75%, a C. That is why some teachers use a separate rubric-to-grade conversion table or a minimum. Use whatever scale your syllabus states.
Can I use this for a 6-trait or 5-point rubric?
Yes. Set the Max column to the top level of each trait, for example 6 or 5.
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
The calculator divides by the total weight, so 30/30/20 works the same as 37.5/37.5/25.
