GWA Calculator
Philippine colleges report your General Weighted Average (GWA) as the unit-weighted mean of your final grades. Most use the 1.00–5.00 scale, where 1.00 is the highest, 3.00 is passing and 5.00 is failing. Enter each subject’s grade and units and the calculator gives your GWA, the grade band it falls in, and whether it is within common Latin honors ranges. Choose the percentage format if your school (or senior high school) records grades out of 100.
Formula: GWA = Σ(grade × units) ÷ Σ units. Schools differ on whether PE and NSTP count. Many exclude them from the GWA used for honors, so there is an option to skip rows named PE or NSTP. Incomplete (INC) and dropped subjects are usually left out until resolved.
Worked example: 1.75 (3 units), 2.25 (5), 1.5 (3), 1.25 (3) and 1.0 (2) give 26.75 ÷ 16 = 1.672. That falls within the University of the Philippines’ cum laude range (1.75 or better). UP’s other ranges are 1.45 or better for magna cum laude and 1.20 or better for summa cum laude. Other universities set their own cut-offs and extra requirements, such as no failing grades or a minimum residency.
Result and step-by-step working
Rounded: 1.67 · 16 units · cum laude range (1.75 or better)
| Subject | Grade | Units | Grade × units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Math 21 | 1.75 | 3 | 5.25 |
| Chem 16 | 2.25 | 5 | 11.25 |
| Kas 1 | 1.50 | 3 | 4.50 |
| Eng 13 | 1.25 | 3 | 3.75 |
| PE 2 | 1.00 | 2 | 2.00 |
- Multiply each grade by its unitsΣ(grade × units) = 26.75
- Add the unitsΣ units = 16
- Divide26.75 ÷ 16 = 1.672. On the common 1.00–5.00 scale that sits in the 1.75 band (88–90%, very good).

Frequently asked questions
- How do I compute my GWA?
- Multiply each final grade by the subject’s units, add the products, and divide by the total units. The calculator does this and shows each step.
- What GWA do I need for Latin honors?
- At the University of the Philippines: 1.20 or better for summa cum laude, 1.45 for magna cum laude and 1.75 for cum laude. Other schools publish their own cut-offs, often with no grade below 2.5 or 3.0 allowed.
- Is GWA the same as GPA?
- Both are weighted averages. A GWA usually uses the 1.00–5.00 scale where lower is better, while a GPA in the US uses 4.0 where higher is better. Converting between them needs your school’s official equivalence table.
- Are PE and NSTP included in GWA?
- Often not for honors or scholarship purposes, but it depends on the school. Use the option above to see both.
