UBC Grade Calculator (Percentage Average and Letter)

The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) grades courses in percentages, and each percentage has a letter equivalent. Enter your courses with their final percentage and credits. The calculator gives each course’s letter grade and your credit-weighted average, which is how UBC sessional and cumulative averages are built.

UBC’s Academic Calendar gives the scale that most faculties use. It is not the same as Ontario scales: a B+ is 76–79%, a B is 72–75% and a B− is 68–71%. Faculties, departments and schools may scale grades, and an unofficial grade from an instructor can change before it reaches your record. Graduate students have higher pass marks: below 60% is a fail for master’s students and below 68% for doctoral students. This calculator uses the undergraduate scale.

Default example: 81% (3 credits), 74% (4), 86% (3), 69% (3) and 92% (4) give 1,372 weighted points over 17 credits. The average is 80.71%, an A− on the UBC scale. If another school asks for a 4.0 GPA, it will usually convert your UBC percentages with its own table.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage is an A at UBC?
An A is 85–89%, an A+ is 90–100% and an A− is 80–84%.
Does UBC use a GPA?
UBC records percentage grades with letter equivalents, and its averages are worked out from the percentages. This calculator gives that credit-weighted average. Other schools that need a 4.0 GPA convert your percentages themselves.
Is 50% a pass at UBC?
For undergraduates, yes: 50–54% is a D and below 50% is an F. Some programs and all graduate programs have higher pass marks.
Why do credits matter?
A 4-credit course counts a third more than a 3-credit course in the average, so a high or low mark in a lab-heavy course moves it more.
