Thapar (TIET) SGPA & CGPA Calculator

Thapar's grade scale has two quirks worth knowing before you calculate. First, A+ (Outstanding) and A (Excellent) both carry 10 grade points — the A+ is a distinction on the transcript, not extra CGPA. Second, there is an E grade ("Exposed") that carries 2 points even though it is not a pass grade; the pass grades are A+, A, A-, B, B-, C and C-, and F is 0.

Under the June 2022 academic regulations, CGPA is the weighted average of all grades since you entered the institute, CGPA = Σ CiGi / Σ Ci. When you repeat a course, the new grade replaces the old one in the calculation, and I (Incomplete) and X (inadequate attendance, dropped or unregistered) grades are left out entirely.

Enter your courses to get the semester figure, then combine semesters by their credits for the CGPA. The result also gives the percentage using the regulation's formula, 10 × CGPA.

Keep in mind that E's 2 points are included in the average even though E is not a pass grade, so replacing an E through a repeat raises the CGPA twice: the 2 points disappear and the new grade's points take their place.

How Thapar (TIET) calculates SGPA and CGPA

Rules from the TIET Academic Regulations (June 2022), Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology:

  • Letter grades are awarded on total performance in the course (mid-semester, quizzes, labs, tutorials, assignments and end-semester exam). A+, A, A-, B, B-, C and C- are pass grades.
  • CGPA = Σ CiGi / Σ Ci over all courses since entry to the institute; when a course is repeated, the new grade replaces the earlier one.
  • I and X grades are not taken into account when calculating the CGPA.
  • Both A+ and A carry 10 grade points; E (Exposed) carries 2.

SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) ÷ ΣCi

CGPA = Σ(SGPAj × Cj) ÷ ΣCj

Percentage of marks = 10 × CGPA

Worked example

The SGPA example loaded above has 7 courses (4 credits at A-, 4 credits at B, 4 credits at A and so on) worth 21.5 credits and 187.5 credit points, so the SGPA is 187.5 ÷ 21.5 = 8.72.

For the CGPA, the example semesters (8.47 on 21.5 credits; 8.02 on 24 credits; 7.88 on 23 credits) give Σ(SGPA × credits) = 555.825 over 68.5 credits, so the CGPA is 8.11, which is 81.10% under Percentage of marks = 10 × CGPA.
