Out of 20 Grade Calculator
Enter your points and this calculator turns a score out of 20 into a percentage and a letter grade. It also shows how many more points you needed for the next letter. The formula is score ÷ 20 × 100. For example, 17 out of 20 is 17 ÷ 20 = 0.85, and 0.85 × 100 = 85%, which is a B on the College Board style scale and a B on a plain 10-point scale.
A score out of 20 is also the standard marking scale in France and several other countries, where 10/20 is the usual pass. That system is not the same as US letter grades, so the letters here apply to US-style classes only. Each point out of 20 is worth exactly 5%.
On a plain 10-point scale you need 18/20 for an A (90%), 16 for a B, 14 for a C and 12 for a D. The College Board style scale adds plus and minus grades and moves the D cut-off to 65%, which is 13/20. Schools set their own scales, so use the one in your syllabus if it differs. If your test had a different total, for example extra-credit questions, change the ‘Out of’ box and the calculator still works.
