Amrita SGPA & CGPA Calculator (B.Tech 2023)

Amrita's B.Tech Regulations 2023 put a half-point grade near the top of the scale: O is 10, A+ is 9.5 and A is 9, and from there the steps are a full point — B+ 8, B 7, C 6 and P 5. F, FA (failed for shortage of attendance) and I (incomplete) carry no points. Grades are relative, set by the class committee for each course (R.16.1).

What surprises many students is R.20 and R.21: the SGPA and CGPA are computed over all the courses registered, including the failed ones. An F in a 3-credit course stays in the denominator with zero points until you clear it, so it pulls your CGPA down immediately. Both figures are rounded off to two decimals.

Enter your courses with their credits to get the semester SGPA, and combine semesters by credits for the CGPA. The 2023 regulations do not set a CGPA-to-percentage formula, so the calculator does not convert.

Grades are relative, so the letter on your grade sheet already reflects how the whole class performed in that course.

How Amrita calculates SGPA and CGPA

Rules from the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham B.Tech Regulations 2023 (School of Engineering):

  • Letter grades are awarded by relative grading, decided by the class committee (R.16.1).
  • SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) / ΣCi over all courses registered in the semester, including failed courses, rounded to two decimals (R.20).
  • CGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) / ΣCi over all courses registered in all semesters so far, again including failed courses (R.21).
  • A course is completed only with P or better (R.19).

SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) ÷ ΣCi

CGPA = Σ(SGPAj × Cj) ÷ ΣCj

Worked example

The SGPA example loaded above has 7 courses (4 credits at A, 4 credits at B+, 3 credits at A+ and so on) worth 20 credits and 173.5 credit points, so the SGPA is 173.5 ÷ 20 = 8.68.

For the CGPA, the example semesters (8.6 on 20 credits; 8.25 on 22 credits; 8.8 on 21 credits) give Σ(SGPA × credits) = 538.3 over 63 credits, so the CGPA is 8.54.
