GPA to Letter Grade Calculator
A GPA is an average, so it rarely lands exactly on a letter. This calculator finds the nearest letter grade for any GPA on a 4.0, 4.3 or 5.0 scale. It also gives the typical percentage range. The letters sit at their standard grade-point values (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 …). A GPA between two letters belongs to the nearer one, so the cut-offs are the midpoints: 3.85 and above reads as an A, 3.50–3.84 as an A−, 3.15–3.49 as a B+, and so on.
Weighted 5.0-scale GPAs include AP and Honors bonuses. For those, the calculator subtracts 1.0 before reading the letter. That is an approximation, because few transcripts are made only of AP classes. Your college’s official conversion takes priority. Some registrars print a fixed table, and that table is the one to use.
Example: a 3.42 GPA is closer to B+ (3.3) than to A− (3.7), so it reads as a B+, roughly 87–89%. A 3.5 is the A−/B+ boundary and reads as A−.
Result and step-by-step working
GPA 3.42 on a 4 scale ≈ B+ (about 87–89%)
- Read the GPA on the 4.0 scale3.42.
- Find the bandEach letter sits at its grade-point value (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 …). A GPA between two letters takes the nearer one, so the cut-offs are the midpoints: 3.85, 3.50, 3.15, 2.85 and so on.
- Result3.42 falls in the B+ band.

Frequently asked questions
- What letter grade is a 3.5 GPA?
- 3.5 is exactly halfway between B+ (3.3) and A− (3.7). By the nearest-letter rule it is an A−. Many people describe it as a B+/A− average.
- What letter grade is a 3.0 GPA?
- A 3.0 GPA is a B average, roughly 83–86% on the College Board scale.
- What letter grade is a 2.5 GPA?
- 2.5 is the boundary between C+ (2.3) and B− (2.7) and reads as a B−. That is roughly 80–82%.
- Is a 4.0 an A or an A+?
- On a 4.0 scale both A and A+ are worth 4.0, so a 4.0 GPA means straight A’s. Some colleges use a 4.3 scale where A+ is 4.3.
