Midterm Grade Calculator

Halfway through a course, your grade only covers the work graded so far. This calculator combines your current grade, the share of the course graded so far and the midterm’s weight. It gives either your grade after the midterm or the midterm score you need to reach a target. Leave the midterm score blank to see only the score needed.

Formulas: grade after the midterm = (current × weight so far + midterm × midterm weight) ÷ (weight so far + midterm weight). Score needed = (target × (weight so far + midterm weight) − current × weight so far) ÷ midterm weight. A table shows what a 100, 90, 80, 70 or 60 on the midterm would do to your grade.

Worked example: 86% on the first 30% of the course, with a 20% midterm. A 78 on the midterm brings you to (86 × 30 + 78 × 20) ÷ 50 = 82.8%. To be at 85% you need 83.5 on the midterm. For the whole-course picture, use the Final Grade Calculator.

Result and step-by-step working

Grade after the midterm
82.80%

With 78% on a midterm worth 20%, on top of 86% on 30% of the course. To reach 85% you need 83.50% on the midterm.

  1. Weight graded so far after the midterm
    30% + 20% = 50% of the course
  2. Grade after the midterm
    (current × done + midterm × weight) ÷ (done + weight) = (86 × 30 + 78 × 20) ÷ 50 = 82.80%
  3. Score needed for 85%
    (85 × 50 − 86 × 30) ÷ 20 = 83.50%

Frequently asked questions

How much does a midterm affect my grade?
Right after the midterm, its share of your current grade is midterm weight ÷ (work so far + midterm weight). A 20% midterm after 30% of coursework makes up 40% of the grade you see at that point.
What is the difference between this and a final grade calculator?
A final grade calculator assumes the final completes the course (all weights add to 100%). Here only part of the course has been graded, so the result is your running grade, not the final one.
What if my school reports a midterm grade (progress report)?
A midterm progress grade is usually your running average at that date. Enter the weights of what has been graded so far.
What if I do not know the weight graded so far?
Add up the weights of every category that has at least one grade, in proportion to what has been assigned. If unsure, ask your instructor or check the learning system’s gradebook settings.
