UC GPA Calculator
The University of California recalculates every applicant’s GPA from A-G courses taken from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade. Enter one row per semester grade with its grade level and whether it is a UC honors course. The calculator shows the three numbers UC talks about: unweighted, capped weighted and fully weighted.
UC’s published method: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0, and pluses and minuses do not count. Each semester of a UC honors-level course with an A, B or C earns one extra point. For California residents these are AP, IB HL, designated IB SL, UC-transferable college courses and UC-certified honors courses. A D or F earns no extra point. The capped GPA allows at most 8 honors points in total, and no more than 4 from 10th grade. Summer courses after 9th and 10th grade count as 10th grade; the summer after 11th counts as 11th.
To meet the GPA requirement, California residents need at least a 3.00 and nonresidents at least a 3.40 in A-G courses. In the default example, 14 semester grades total 48 points with 8 honors points, so the capped weighted GPA is (48 + 8) ÷ 14 = 4.00 and the unweighted GPA is 3.43.
Result and step-by-step working
Unweighted 3.43 · fully weighted 4.00 · 14 semester grades. Minimum for UC: 3.00 (California residents), 3.40 (nonresidents).

- Grade pointsA = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 for each semester grade. Pluses and minuses do not count. Sum = 48 over 14 grades.
- Honors pointsEach semester of a UC honors-level course with an A, B or C earns 1 extra point (D and F earn none). You have 2 in 10th grade (at most 4 count, so 2) and 6 in 11th grade. The cap is 8 in total, so 8 count.
- Divide by the number of gradesUnweighted = 48 ÷ 14 = 3.43. Capped weighted = (48 + 8) ÷ 14 = 4.00. Fully weighted (no cap, 8 points) = 4.00.
Frequently asked questions
- Does UC count 9th and 12th grade?
- No. Only A-G grades earned from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade go into the UC GPA. Senior-year grades are reviewed but not averaged in.
- What is the difference between capped and fully weighted?
- Capped weighted limits honors points to 8 in total and 4 from 10th grade. Fully weighted adds an extra point for every honors semester with an A, B or C, with no cap.
- Does a college course count as an honors course?
- Yes. UC counts UC-transferable college courses as honors-level. One college course is one grade and one honors point.
- Is the UC GPA the same at every campus?
- The eligibility GPA is calculated the same way for all campuses, and UC computes the official one when you apply. Campuses may also look at other GPA measures in their holistic review.
