Ontario Top 6 Average Calculator

Ontario universities admit high-school students mainly on a top-six average: the average of six Grade 12 university (4U) or university/college (4M) courses. Most programs require certain courses, such as ENG4U and MHF4U, to be among the six, even if they are not your best marks. Enter your Grade 12 courses, their level and which ones your program requires. The calculator builds the six the standard way and shows the average.

The method: all required prerequisites go in first. The remaining places are filled with your highest other 4U or 4M marks. College (4C), workplace (4E) and open (4O) courses are left out. The calculator also shows your best six with no prerequisites forced in, so you can see how much the program’s requirements cost you. Individual universities differ in details, such as whether repeated or summer courses are accepted, so check each program’s admission page.

Default example: four prerequisites (84, 91, 88, 79) plus the two best other 4U/4M marks (95 and 93) average 88.33%. With no prerequisites the best six would be 90.17%. The 98 in an open course does not count.

  1. Keep the prerequisites
Courses your program requires are always in the average, even when they are not your highest marks.
  2. Fill with your best other 4U/4M marks
The remaining 2 places go to your highest other university (U) or university/college (M) courses. 4C, 4E and open courses are left out.
  3. Average
    530 ÷ 6 = 88.33%.

Frequently asked questions

Do 4C or open courses count in a top six?
Not for Ontario university admission. Only 4U and 4M courses count. 4C, 4E and open (4O) courses are excluded.
Are Grade 11 marks used?
Universities often make early offers using Grade 11 finals and Grade 12 midterms, but the final admission average is based on Grade 12 4U/4M courses.
What if I took a course twice?
Universities usually use the highest mark, but some programs look at repeats more closely. Check each school’s policy.
Is the top six the same as OMSAS?
No. OMSAS is the application service for Ontario medical schools and uses university grades on a 4.0 scale. Use the OMSAS GPA calculator for that.
