Alberta Diploma Exam Calculator
In Alberta, every Grade 12 diploma course (English 30-1, Math 30-1, Biology 30 and others) has a provincial diploma exam. Your official final mark is 70% school-awarded mark and 30% diploma exam. The 30% weighting returned on September 1, 2023. Enter both marks to get your final mark, or enter a target to see the diploma mark you need.
The calculation follows Alberta Education: final = 0.70 × school mark + 0.30 × diploma mark, reported as a whole percent. Alberta’s own example: a 68% school mark and a 60% diploma give 66%. You need a combined 50% to pass. Mature students follow a different rule. If their diploma mark is higher than the school mark, the diploma mark alone becomes the final mark. Choose “Yes” for that case.
Default example: 0.70 × 82 + 0.30 × 71 = 78.7, so the final mark is 79%. To reach 80% this student would need 74% on the diploma, and to pass, only 0%. The table shows how the final mark moves with different diploma results, which helps when you decide whether to rewrite.

- What diploma mark do I need to pass?
- Enough to bring the blended mark to 50%. With a 60% school mark, 0.70 × 60 = 42, so you would need about 25% on the diploma (42 + 7.5 = 49.5, which rounds to 50). The calculator works it out for your mark.
- Can I rewrite a diploma exam?
- Yes, students can register to rewrite in a later administration. The calculator shows what final mark different rewrite results would give.
- What happens if a diploma exam is cancelled?
- Alberta Education has exempted students from cancelled sittings in the past. In that case the school-awarded mark becomes the final mark, with a transcript notation.
