HSC Aggregate Calculator (Scaled Marks)
Your NSW ATAR is a rank worked out from an aggregate of scaled marks. The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) adds the scaled marks of your best 2 units of English and your best 8 units from the remaining units, for a maximum of 500. Enter each HSC course with its scaled mark per unit (out of 50), its units and its type. The calculator picks the 10 units the way UAC does and shows the aggregate.
Rules applied: English units are chosen first (the best 2). Any course can contribute part of its units, so one unit of a 2-unit course can fill the last place. Spare English units can count among the other 8. At most 2 units of Category B courses can be included. You must complete at least four subject areas to be ATAR-eligible, but the aggregate itself can come from fewer.
What this page does not do: turn the aggregate into an ATAR. The ATAR is a rank against everyone in your age group, recalculated each year by UAC’s Technical Committee on Scaling. The same aggregate gives slightly different ATARs in different years, and UAC generally does not allow its scaling data to be used in ATAR calculators. Your scaled marks come from UAC’s scaling, not from your HSC marks directly. In the default example, the best 10 units add up to 406.5.

- Best 2 units of EnglishEnglish units contribute 83.
- Best 8 other unitsAny remaining units, including extra English units and parts of courses, sorted by scaled mark; at most 2 units of Category B count (0 used). Contribution 323.5.
- Aggregate83 + 323.5 = 406.5 out of 500. Your ATAR is a rank: UAC turns aggregates into ATARs each year from the whole cohort, so the same aggregate can map to a slightly different ATAR in different years.
Frequently asked questions
- Does English have to count in my ATAR?
- Yes. Your best 2 units of English always count, even if they are not among your best marks.
- What is a Category B course?
- Mainly VET (vocational) courses. No more than 2 units of Category B can count toward the aggregate.
- Can an Extension course count?
- Yes. Extension courses are 1 unit and count like any other unit if they are among your best.
- Is my HSC mark the same as my scaled mark?
- No. HSC marks are aligned by NESA. Scaled marks are calculated by UAC from those results to adjust for course difficulty, and only scaled marks go into the aggregate.
