VCE Aggregate Calculator (Scaled Study Scores)
In Victoria, VTAC calculates your ATAR from an aggregate of scaled study scores. Enter each Unit 3/4 study with its scaled score and mark your English-group studies (English, English Language, Literature or EAL). The calculator builds the aggregate the way VTAC describes it.
VTAC’s method: the primary four is your scaled score in one English-group study plus your next best three permissible scaled scores. Then 10% of your fifth and sixth permissible scaled scores are added as increments. At most six studies count. VTAC also allows other increments, such as some VET, higher-education studies and interstate Year 12 credits, which this page does not model. VTAC’s permissibility rules, which limit how some studies can be combined, are not checked either.
What this page does not do: convert the aggregate into an ATAR. VTAC ranks every aggregate against the whole year’s cohort, so the same aggregate gives a slightly different ATAR each year. Scaled scores come from VTAC’s scaling of your study scores, so use real scaled scores or your own estimates. In the default example, the primary four is 35 + 38.6 + 37.2 + 31 = 141.8. Adding 10% of 29.5 and 27.4 gives 147.49.

| Study | Scaled score | Role | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 35 | English (primary four) | 35 |
| Mathematical Methods | 38.6 | Primary four | 38.6 |
| Chemistry | 37.2 | Primary four | 37.2 |
| Psychology | 29.5 | 10% increment | 2.95 |
| Legal Studies | 31 | Primary four | 31 |
| Health and Human Development | 27.4 | 10% increment | 2.74 |
- Primary fourBest English-group scaled score + the next best three permissible scaled scores = 141.8.
- Increments10% of the fifth and sixth scaled scores = 5.69.
- Aggregate141.8 + 5.69 = 147.49. VTAC ranks every aggregate against the whole year to give the ATAR, so this page does not convert it. VTAC’s permissibility rules (limits on combining some studies) are not checked here.
Frequently asked questions
- Does English have to be in my ATAR?
- Yes. One English-group study (English, English Language, Literature or EAL) must be in the primary four, even if it is not one of your best scores.
- How much do my fifth and sixth subjects count?
- 10% each of their scaled scores. A fifth and sixth study scaled at 30 add 3 points each.
- What is the difference between a study score and a scaled score?
- A study score (out of 50) ranks you within a study. VTAC then scales study scores to adjust for the strength of each study’s cohort, and only scaled scores go into the aggregate.
- Can I take more than six studies?
- Yes, but only the best six permissible results count toward the aggregate.
